Life on the island of knights, Rhodes, Greece
I welcome
you to the most beautiful island, Rhodes, located in Greece, which is
admittedly flooded every year by thousands of tourists. You may often hear the
name "The Island of the Knights", which came from its history as in
1309 it was sold to the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. We could
otherwise call it "Butterfly Island", as a friend of mine usually
does, because of the natural park "Butterfly Valley" that you find on
the island and is the summer residence for many butterflies.
My life on
the island came through the “Panhellenic examinations” (exams we take in Greece
when we finish high school for entering at university education) as my success
was the Department of Mediterranean Studies at the University of the Aegean of
Rhodes.
My first
stay on the island was for a week at the beginning of September in order to
organize my student life. Unfortunately, due to the difficult situation we find
ourselves in, I have not been able, like many students, to experience the first
day of school at the University. In this context, we understand that my daily
life on the island is very simplistic. Of course, this does not confirm any
view that I am not having fun and not enjoying my life in Rhodes.
The island is rich with beautiful places I have not yet discovered. Every day you are given the opportunity to experience an extra beautiful place. Of course, I'm still at the beginning but I've already loved this special beauty of the island. In addition, the castles of Rhodes and the vintage style buildings take you to another era, thus showing as masterpieces and inconceivable.
My favorite
place so far is the Castle of the old town and especially when the darkness
covers the sky and the evening lights of the "mansion" space create a
warm atmosphere. What can be more pleasant than crossing the exquisite straits
of the castle watching the well-being of the world, people working and inviting
you politely to their little workshop but also listening to the dreamy melodies
of all the leading musicians, in my opinion, standing in those alleys? Of
course, the one who steals the impressions for me is the talented painter at
the entrance of the castle who creates wonderful and exquisite portraits for all
the visitors.
It is also worth mentioning the excellent blue sea of this island, whose view fills you and "builds" in you fine emotions. Undeniably, for the famous beaches of Rhodes the most suitable time to visit them is the season of summer.
Another
attraction I have visited so far and, I believe, needs to be noted in my list
of favorites is the Fortress of Agios Nikolaos. At the entrance of the port,
also, at the point where according to medieval tradition was one of the seven
wonders of the ancient world, the famous Colossus of Rhodes, the famous bronze
deer have now been placed. In that "alley" there are also the old
windmills which is an additional great attraction of the island.
